Robert's Birth Story

Doctors:
Drs Jennings and Bledsoe

Nurses:
Cindy Gambrell Mon 8p-7a, Lisa Evans Tues 7a - 3p, Jamie Burton Tues 3p-11p

Birth Story:
At my 40 week doctor's visit I had had no labor pains and was not dilated. They scheduled me to be induced on 06/06/2006. I was admitted to the hospital on the night prior after having a great dinner at Red Lobster. The following morning, after a good nights sleep, the nurses started a pitocin drip to get things started. They started the pitocin drip slow and increased it every 15 min I was at the maximum dosage a few hours later. I stayed at the maxed dosage for several more hours. At 3 pm Dr. Jennings checked me and I had only dilated to 3 cm. Dr. Jennings then decided to break my water and he placed an internal fetal monitor on the baby. Around 4 Pm I began feeling unbearable labor pains. At that time Dr. Jennings authorized an epidural. Dr Karpik, the anesthesiologist came in and gave me the epidural. Dr. Jennings, Lisa and Jamie also decided to take me off pitocin for 30 min and restart it at half strength and gradually increase it every 20 - 25 minuets. After that life was wonderful. I took a nap and watched the Game Show Network. Around 8PM Jamie came in and checked me again and they said I was completely dilated and the baby was working his way down the birth canal. Dr. Jennings came in and I started to push. I pushed for an hour before Dr. Jennings decided to try using the forceps. He placed the forceps and pulled on the baby as I pushed. He told me that the baby was not coming. He said I was fully dilated and baby is simply not fitting down the birth canal. At that time we elected t have a C-section. I was prepped in 20 min or so and within 5 or 6 minutes of the surgery starting Baby Robert was born at 9:48 PM. He had a little trouble during his first minute and lost 2/2 points for color and 1/2 points for respiration in his 10 point APGAR score. By the fifth minute he had regained his respiration point and 1 color point giving him a 9/10 which is an acceptable score for a new born. Michael and Robert went with the Newborn Nurse Elizabeth to the nursery while I was being sewed up. I spent an hour in recovery with RN Jamie before being moved to my new mom room to meet up with Michael and Baby Robert.

Robert Michael how cute you are!! I can't wait to see you in person. You have a great Mom and Dad and I am very thankful you are here and healthy. Keep them on their toes! It won't take you too long to get them trained the way you want them.

Welcome to the outside! Three things you need to know: The big guy is your dad, the pretty lady is your mom, and we all love your family. Congrats, Mike & Elizabeth!!!

Welcome, Robert! We met you for the first time today, and you are sweet! Well, we didn't technically meet because you were asleep, but we'll count it anyway :) Welcome to our "group." We look forward to our visits on Sunday nights. Eric and Jennifer

We think Robert is the most like Maddie as he likes to eat and sleep all the time. If he starts spinning in circles, we are going to worry!!

Wrong orange, but we love him anyway. Maybe we can win him back from, the dark (orange) side. PS - What's up with the squirrel?

Woo-hoo! This makes 4 boys for the girls from WKU! Congratulations to you all! The only advice you need is to love love love...everything else will work itself out. Boys are a blast...but warning, they are weird! You will say things you never imagined! So far my favorite has been, "Don't pick the dog's nose!" Look out! Love, Sandy
